A NOTE FROM ME
Good evening, Caroline. Whether you’re reading this over dinner or catching your breath at the end of the day, I’m glad you’re here. There’s a lot happening this week, some of it long-promised and finally moving, so let’s get into it.
GOOD NEWS IN CAROLINE
A little good news out of Town Hall: Bowling Green’s town manager, India Adams-Jacobs, was just elected president of the Virginia Local Government Management Association, the statewide professional organization for the people who keep local governments running.
It’s the kind of thing that’s easy to scroll past, but it’s worth highlighting. It means someone leading our small town is respected enough by her peers across all of Virginia to be chosen to lead them, too. Bowling Green is punching above its weight. Nice to see.
THIS WEEKEND IN CAROLINE

SCHOOL & LIBRARY
Deadline this weekend: CCPS Legacy Award nominations close Sunday, Aug. 31 at 5pm. Two new categories this year, Hall of Fame for athletics and Hall of Distinction for professional achievement and service. Anyone can nominate someone. Details here.
Back to School Nights are coming up: CHS & CMS on Monday, Sept. 1, and elementary schools on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Check CCPS for times and locations.
And a note for the little ones: the county libraries keep a steady weekly rhythm of story times and crafts across the Bowling Green, Ladysmith, and Port Royal branches, one of the few places something free and good happens every single week. HELP & NEEDS
If you’re part of a local nonprofit, or know someone who is, the Amazon Rappahannock Region Community Fund is accepting grant applications through Sept. 21. There’s $350,000 available for organizations serving Caroline and neighboring counties, with focus areas including STEM, sustainability, community development, digital skills, cultural heritage, and health. Worth a look before the deadline. (Fredericksburg Free Press)
ONE FUN FACT ABOUT CAROLINE
Edmund Pendleton, born in Caroline County in 1721, was one of the sharpest legal minds of the founding era. He presided over Virginia’s convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution, served as the first Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, and led the state’s first Supreme Court. Thomas Jefferson called him the ablest man in debate he ever met. He lived most of his life here and is buried here. Not bad for this quiet county. (Source: Encyclopedia Virginia)
